Social Media Environments for Literary Purposes

I read the Elit – Alan Bigelow on Instagram. This directly utilizes social media for it’s literary purposes. This Instagram page seeks to take headstones and turn them into small phrases. The phrases are generally common ones or references to common phrases. This content and form go well together, because this social media format is designed to allow pictures and captions. The combination of these captions and pictures in this environment allow the author to give death a lighter feeling.

I also read Elit – Bigelow: How to Rob a Bank. This piece mimics the phone screen. It tells the whole story through the actions that someone takes on their phone. I think it’s a very clever way to tell a story. The use of the cell phone makes the story modern, and it’s something that a lot of people can relate to. The use of the phone also simulates a social media environment, because so many people associate the cell phone with social media. This story even includes social media by depicting Instagram on the phone when the bank gets robbed. It really shows how stupid people can be when it comes to what to post and what not to post on social media.

Twine Ideas

My first idea for a Twine story is a detective that’s looking for a murderer. I thought that this could be kind of fun. If I did this story I’d use the hypertext to have the reader look for the clues. If I did this I would have a way to lose and not catch the murderer. I’m not entirely sure of what the story for the murder would be, but I think it would be pretty cool.

My second story idea is a superhero that’s new to having superpowers. I’d have the reader make choices about how to use the powers in different situations, and based on the choice they could be successful or completely screw up. With that I might do a score system (like experience points). I’d use this to make it easier to control the powers as the reader made more successful choices.

My last Twine story idea is a wizard that is at the age where it’s determined whether they’ll be evil or good. Every choice the reader makes will push them one way or the other. I’d use a score system here as well to determine what their alignment is in the end. I’d also have an ending where the evil and good points are equal and they become the first wizard to not have an alignment.

With Those We Love Alive

On the list of the hypertexts I chose to play With Those We Love Alive. The game takes a decent amount of time to play if you choose to explore everything around you. I chose to explore everything because I wanted to know all the different changes that could happen to my environment in the game.

I enjoyed the aspect of drawing the sigils. (Although I did have to look up what a sigil was, because I had no idea.) A sigil is an inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magical power. It does instruct you to draw them on your skin. I personally chose to do them on a piece of paper, because the pen that I had did not write well on skin. The sigils made me feel more connected to the story.

Another aspect of the game I enjoyed is the choices that I was free to make. It allowed me to make dialogue choices as well as action choices. It allowed me to feel more in control of the story. Sometimes I was unsure of what to choose, but then I remembered at the beginning that there was a message that said nothing I do is wrong. This gave me more confidence in my decisions in the game.

Broadside Work-in-Progress

So I decided to go into InDesign and play around a little bit to see what I like and what I don’t like. I like the layout that I have so far as well as the text that will be on the broadside. This is what I have so far:

I definitely want the text to be indented like that. I want a deathshead moth as my background, but I think I’d like to draw it myself. Also I want it to be more transparent so the text will pop. Another thing I’d like to do is change the text color of the word beautiful. I haven’t figured out how to do that in InDesign yet, so I need to play around with that a little more. Another thing I might play around with is background color. The white seems kind of plain, so I want to change it. I’m just not entirely sure what color I want it to be yet.

Broadside Idea

So for my broadside I decided to modify an old poem that I wrote. This is the poem:

You are beautiful

Not because someone says you are

But because you decide to be beautiful

One design goal I might try to accomplish with this broadside is juxtaposing images. I think a juxtaposition of something that is traditionally considered ugly with a poem about beauty will make the poem more powerful.

I haven’t yet decided whether I’ll make the broadside in color or not. What I’m currently thinking is that certain parts of the broadside will be in color while the rest is in black and white. I’ll make the decision on color once I’ve decided on the picture and poem layout.

McLuhan Response

One facing-page spread that I found especially interesting are pages 56 and 57 (or page 33 in the pdf). This page talks about how Western artists are locked in a visual world that is strictly horizontal and vertical. It then goes on to talk about how people pre-alphabet lived in a boundless world. The setup of the page compliments this content.

The page is set up so that the text has been turned on its head. This brings the two pages back into the pre-alphabet world. It breaks the bounds of the visual world that the Western artists live in. It turns the way you must read the page on the head, and exemplifies the point of the text.
